Manuscript appraisals offer feedback on all aspects of a drafted manuscript: structure, character, plot, style, genre and level of further editing required. Manuscript appraisals aren’t as in-depth as developmental edits but give authors an idea of what their manuscript is in need of so they can take their next steps with confidence and guidance.
Cost: $0.01 per word
Timeframe: up to 3 weeks (dependent on word count)

- One pass of your manuscript
- Detailed report addressing the strengths, opportunities for improvement and next steps of your manuscript
A developmental edit involves tackling the big-picture elements of your manuscript. This means looking at plot, character development, pace, structure and theme. We’ll keep in mind the genre that you’re writing in and assess where overall improvements can be made while paying close attention to what’s working and the strengths of the manuscript.
Cost: $0.035 per word
Timeframe: up to 5 weeks (dependent on word count)
What’s Included:
- Two passes of your manuscript
- A detailed editorial report
- Comments in the margins of your Word document
- Blurb editing (note: author must provide blurb)
A line/copy edit looks at your manuscript at the sentence level. This involves assessing word choice, clarity, syntax, intention, consistency, grammar, punctuation and spelling. Line/copy editing focuses on both the style and mechanics of writing. During this stage, paragraph styling is applied to your manuscript for your formatter’s ease.
Cost: $0.025 per word
Timeframe: up to 8 weeks (dependent on word count)
What’s Included:
- Two rounds (dependent on word count and timeline, final proofread included)
- A brief editorial report at conclusion of round one
- A fully marked-up and styled Word document (using track changes)
- Author style sheet
- Blurb editing (note: author must provide blurb)
A copy edit looks at your manuscript from a purely mechanical perspective. This involves assessing grammar, punctuation and spelling. During this stage, paragraph styling is applied to your manuscript for your formatter’s ease.
Cost: $0.015 per word
Timeframe: 6 weeks (dependent on word count)
What’s Included:
- One round (final proofread included)
- A brief editorial letter detailing corrections made
- A fully marked-up and styled Word document (using track changes)
- Author style sheet
- Blurb editing (note: author must provide blurb)
A developmental and line/copy edit combines both big-picture and stylistic/mechanical editing, taking place over separate rounds. A complimentary blurb writing service is included with this combo.
Cost: $0.05 per word
Timeframe: up to 16 weeks (dependent on word count)

- One to two developmental passes of your manuscript (dependent on word count and timeline)
- A detailed editorial report at conclusion of developmental edit

- Two rounds of line/copy editing (dependent on word count and timeline, final proofread included)

A Coven Press blurb provides authors with an industry-standard blurb designed to capture the essence of your story and entice readers to dive into your world.
Cost: $280.00
